MICHIGAN DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY FEE
How It Works
1. Traffic stop occurs and driver receives citation
(Driver is unable to provide proof of insurance at the time of the traffic stop.)
2. Driver is found responsible or guilty of violation
(No Proof of Insurance violations may be dismissed by the court if proof of insurance is provided before the court appearance date. However, court fees may still be required.)
3. Court informs the Department of State of driving violation (offense)
(No Proof of Insurance violations not submitted to the Department of State if proof of insurance was provided.)
4. Department of State refers qualifying offenses or points to Department of Treasury for collection
5. Department of Treasury sends driver notification of Driver Responsibility fee (assessment)
6. Driver must pay Driver Responsibility fee within 30 days
7. If Driver Responsibility fee not paid, driving privileges may be interrupted
8. Collection efforts continue until full payment is received
(Under certain conditions, driving privileges may be reinstated with an approved Installment Agreement).
9. Driver Responsibility and reinstatement fees paid in full? Driving privileges restored
Please note: A fee is also assessed for a number of other offenses including but not limited to: Drunk Driving, Reckless, Drove While License Expired.
It is crucial that you are aware of this fee, failure to pay could result in loss of your driving privileges.
