In an effort to continue the city and university cooperation, Central Michigan Universiy’s Office of Residence Life has banned any guests from staying in the residence halls through Sunday.
“We had been meeting with the CMU Police, and they have been our contact with the city of Mt. Pleasant Police,” associate director of Resident Life Joan Schmidt said. “What we’re doing is providing positive things on the weekend, especially with new students, indoctrinate them with good positive things on campus rather than go to Main Street.”
This is also to help the students who feel like they don’t have a voice yet, according to Schmidt. The purpose is to have people feel comfortable in their rooms.
During the entire Welcome Week roommates should be living with just other roommates. Exceptions will be made for only serious situations.
“If your sister is visiting, and she spends an extra night or if your parents are in Europe or whatever,” Schmidt said. “Exceptions will be made but only with the caveat that each of the roommates agrees that it’s OK.”
CMU’s Welcome Weekend attracts a lot more attention than other universities’ because other schools haven’t started yet. CMU is the first state school to begin classes, and Schmidt as well as city officials hope this help curb some of the wildness of Welcome Weekend that has occurred in the past.
“People bring friends from home or high school and think it’s OK to drink and party because none of the other state schools have started,” Schmidt said. “A lot of kids don’t have much to do so they come up here and party and they don’t really care because they are not a CMU student.
“They think our rules don’t pertain to them.”
The ban started last Saturday and continues up until class starts on Monday.
