Even though the legalization of marijuana did not make the ballot in 2016, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed bills that paved the way for medical marijuana reform. As part of the reform, edibles, marijuana infused foodstuffs and beverages, have been legalized.
Edibles are marijuana infused products, usually in the form of food or drink, that provide the consumer with a psychoactive active effect or “high” that is similar to the high achieved when smoking marijuana. Although similar, the high from an edible can take anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours to occur– whereas the high from smoking marijuana has a much more rapid onset, usually occurring within moments of inhaling the smoke. Also, the high from an edible can be much much stronger and longer lasting than a smoking high.
To those seeking to receive the benefits of medical marijuana, edibles are a much more comfortable alternative to smoking. Not only do they come in a variety of treats– brownies, gummies, sodas, cakes, etc– but, in doing so, they provide a tasty alternative void of the undesirables that accompany smoking.
The use of edibles is commonly seen in children seeking medical treatment. Instead of having to take up the harshness of inhaling and exhaling thick, gritty smoke, children can easily munch on an edible. Not to mention that offering a child a small treat following a seizure seems much more human than offering them a pipe and a lighter to alleviate the debilitating activity in their brain.
The legalization of edibles and medical marijuana reform is a step in the right direction. Now that the manufacturing and sale of edibles is legal, regulations ensuring the quality and safety of these products will be implemented. In doing so, patients seeking the benefits of marijuana treatment through alternative methods can do so knowing the product they are consuming is regulated and approved for its medicinal uses.
